Yanecek, Merle
Merle Yanecek, 90, of the Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, died there Thursday, June 20, 2013. A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with a private graveside service to follow.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Myrtle; children, Kay (Harold) Shepherd of Vinton, Myrna (Kirk) VanDeWalle of Bella Vista, Ark. and Ted (Dale) Yanecek of Iowa City; a brother, Arnold Yanecek of Walford; grandchildren, Jessica (Desi) Druschel, Libby Greenlee, Kelly (Jessi) VanDeWalle, Kim Chamberlain and Paige Butterfield; and great-grandchildren, Jace and Halle Druschel, Jachob Roster, Sloane VanDeWalle, Chelsee (fiance, Jake) Chamberlain, Cara and Mallori Chamberlain and Brock and Micah Butterfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Mary Yanecek.
Merle was born Oct. 18, 1922, in Walford to Joseph and Anna Yanecek. He graduated from Walford High School and Iowa State College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain. Merle taught GI school in Garner where he met and later married Myrtle Hall on Dec. 4, 1948. He worked in agriculture for his entire career, retiring from Kent Feeds in 1984.
He was a member of the Fairfax Masonic Lodge, the American Legion Pekomy Post, the Iowa State University Alumni Association and St. Mark's Methodist Church.
