Wuennecke, Armin G.
Armin G. Wuennecke, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of New Albin, died Friday, April 5, 2013, at West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 8, at St. John's Wheatland United Church of Christ in New Albin, with Pastor Paul Burgess officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and one hour beforeservices Monday at the church.
Armin George Wuennecke was born Dec. 15, 1925, in New Albin, Iowa, the son of John and Ella (Wiemerslage) Wuennecke. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Wheatland UCC Church. Armin attended the rural Wheatland Elementary School and graduated from New Albin High School. He served in the U.S. Army as mess sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Following his discharge, he took correspondence courses in bookkeeping and was a bookkeeper for a car dealership in La Crosse, Wis., and later for Welch Fertilizer in Waukon for many years. On April 16, 1983, he married Dorothy Beneke Brown at St. John's Wheatland Church.
Armin was an active lifelong member of St. John's Church, where he held numerous offices. He was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed bowling league, dancing, and square dancing. Armin and Dorothy also enjoyed traveling and took bus trips all across the United States.
Armin is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a niece, Angela (David) Strong, and a nephew, Alan (Kelly) Wuennecke, both of New Albin; five stepchildren, Donald (Norma) Brown of Baldwin, Mo., Darryl (Rosalie) Brown of Cedar Rapids, Darlene (John) Van Pelt of Antioch, Ill., Dennis (Julie) Brown of Ames and Daniel (Wanda) Brown of Madrid, Iowa; 16 stepgrandchildren; 30 stepgreat-grandchildren; four stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Irma Ashbacher of Caledonia, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edgar; and sister-in-law, Shirley Wuennecke.
