Wood, Richard E. 'Dick' Wood
Richard E. “Dick” Wood, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday, March 22, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Hoeger officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Monday.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; special companion, their dog Annie; stepbrother, Kenneth Yardley of Cedar Rapids; and special aunts, Darlene Kerr of Coggon and Betty Abernathy of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are several special brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, parents and aunts and uncles.
Richard Earl Wood was born April 12, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Earl and Myrtle (Moss) Wood. He graduated from high school and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. On Nov. 1, 1952, he married Dorothy Fenton in Yuma, Ariz. Dick was a ceramic tile setter for many years and owned his own business until he retired in 1993. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Dick's true love was basketball, baseball and football. His favorite teams were the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and Dallas Mavericks. Dick and Dorothy also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years and enjoyed going to casinos.
