A memorial funeral Mass for Winifred "Winnie" Matejka will be held at noon Friday, June 16, at St. Monica Catholic Church, 357 S. Sixth St., Coos Bay, Ore., with Father Robert Wolf officiating. Cremation rites will be held at Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory in Coos Bay with inurnment in Cedar Rapids.
Winifred was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Feb. 23, 1927, to John and Julia (Scanlon) O'Connell. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on June 12, 2017.
She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Cedar Rapids and attended Mount Mercy College. She was married to her husband, James Matejka, for 62 years until his death in 2012. She was devoted to her family and provided continual care for her daughter with Down syndrome. She was instrumental in establishing the ARC in the 1960s in Cedar Rapids.
Winifred is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne Matejka; son, Joseph and his wife, Joyce; granddaughter, Michelle and her husband, Dr. Dan Liefwalker, of Woodside, Calif.; and granddaughter, Julia and her husband, Dr. Ben McMorran, and their two sons, Owen and Miles, of Eugene, Ore.
