Wingfield, Gregory 'Big Wing' 'Bud' K.
Gregory “Big Wing” “Bud” K. Wingfield, 64, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospice. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Oak Hill Jackson Community Church, 1202 10th St. SE, with Brother Richard Reed officiating.
Greg was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and graduated in 1967 from Washington High School, where he excelled in football, basketball and track. Greg was a member of the 1966 winning 800 relay team at the Drake Relays. From 1967-1968, Greg attended Keokuk (Iowa) Community College and played basketball. He also played semipro football for the Cedar Rapids Raiders and was invited to tryout with the Green Bay Packers. He was an avid chess player.
Greg was a technician in the psychiatric ward at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and at St. Luke's Hospital for 28 years.
Survivors include many cousins; and close friends who were like family, Jim McKenzie of Cleveland, Ohio, Tracy Scheib and Jim Stainbrook of Cedar Rapids and Rudy Sims of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Wingfield; and guardians, Albert and Erma Carr.
