Winborn, Katherine K.
Katherine K. Winborn, 99, of Marengo, formerly of Williamsburg, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, with Father Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, and one hour before the service Thursday at the church. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.

Katherine is survived by two daughters, Kathie Ballard and husband Bill of Marengo, and Mary Ann Boardman and husband Jim of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Barb Ballard of Marengo, Billy Ballard (Kelsey) of Marengo, Lori Short (Kevin) of Oklahoma, Jim Boardman (Carrie) of Cedar Rapids, and Erin Hess (Travis) of Colorado; seven great-grandchildren, Blake Heller (Jasmin), Lisa Heller, Sidney Ballard, Matt, Joe, and Zach Short and Rachel Boardman; and one great-great-grandchild, Maddex Heller.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Katie Kitzmann; her husbands, Mardis Houseman and Lew Winborn; a sister, Lucille Kitzmann; and a brother, Loren Kitzmann.
Katherine Honora Kitzmann was born on Nov. 13, 1911, in Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of Alex and Katie Manion Kitzmann. She graduated from What Cheer High School in 1927 and received a business degree from AIB Business School in Des Moines. She married Mardis K. Houseman on June 24, 1939, in Des Moines. The couple settled in Williamsburg. He died Jan. 9, 1973. She married Lewis Winborn on June 12, 1980 in Williamsburg. Katherine worked for many years at O'Neill Oil Company as a bookkeeper and receptionist.
Katherine, as her high school yearbook said, had the “gift of gab.” She had a genuine concern for friends and relatives and enjoyed visiting with everyone. She grew violets and many other flowers and plants and shared these with others. She enjoyed crafts, especially knitting and tatting. She made and shared many wonderful craft creations. She loved her family and was an important part of her grandchildren's lives, both when they were young and as they matured. She enjoyed traveling, both in the U.S. and in Europe. Katherine was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg and the Altar and Rosary Society and the Garden Club.
