Wilson, Sonia Ann (Scholl)
Sonia Ann (Scholl) Wilson, 84, of Iowa City, passed away at Mercy Iowa City on Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, following a lengthy illness. Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City. The funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m.
Because of Sonia's passion for education, specially music education, in lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to either The University of Northern Iowa School of Music Scholarship Fund or Belmond-Klemme Community Schools Scholarship Fund.
Sonia was born Nov. 10, 1929, in Middleport, Ohio, to Konrad and Ondine Scholl. She attended schools in Middleport and Pomeroy, Ohio as well as Hays, Kan., and Casper, Wyo. She graduated from high school in Boone, Iowa in 1948. She was the concert mistress of the very first Iowa All State Orchestra in 1946 and co-concert mistress in 1947. She continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College, graduating with a B.A. in music education in 1952. She married Robert J. Wilson in December 1952 in Boone.
Sonia began her teaching career in the fall of 1952 in Toledo, Iowa, where she taught K-12 vocal music. She continued her teaching career in Alexander, Iowa, where she taught K-12 vocal and instrumental music until 1957. Following a 12-year absence to raise her three boys, Sonia began teaching again in Belmond, Iowa in 1969. She taught middle school instrumental music there until her retirement in 1992. During her teaching tenure in Belmond, she also directed the Belmond Methodist Church choir and the Belmond Community Chorus for several years.
Sonia treasured her family above all other things. She was blessed with three boys: Scott, Bruce and Brian. She was most proud of her two grandchildren: Colin and Kayci.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; and their three sons, Scott (Mondy Raibon) of Patterson, N.Y., Bruce (Cathy) Wilson of Iowa City and Brian Wilson of Hutchinson, Kan.; and grandchildren, Colin Wilson of Iowa City and Kayci Wilson of Hutchinson, Kan.
Sonia was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter-in-law, Julie.
