Williams, H. Marjorie Whitman

H. Marjorie Whitman Williams, 91, formerly of Mechanicsville, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at Morgan Funeral & Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon, by Celebrant Mary Morgan. The family will greet friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville.

Surviving Marge are her three sons, Lyle (Teresa), Northfield, Minn., Keith (Gail) of Minnetonka, Minn., and Kent (Myra Ping) of Chicago; two daughters, Lynn Kerdus (Robert) of Cedar Rapids and Jean (Ed) Johnson of Hiawatha; son-in-law, Steve Harman of Meeker, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma Tvedt of Whittier, Calif., and Joan Hatcher (Jerry) of Palm Desert, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Kelly of Harmony, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Marge in death were her husband, Norman Williams; daughter, Ann Harman; brother, Dale Whitman; and sister, Velna Owens.

Marge was born Dec. 14, 1921, in rural Jones County, the daughter of Frank and Lois Arbingast Whitman. She graduated from Mechanicsville High School in 1939 and Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1942. Marge taught at Tipton and Stanwood.

Marge married Norm Williams on Nov. 29, 1947, in Mechanicsville. The couple farmed south of Mechanicsville, moving into town in 1960 to operate Williams Feed Service, retiring in 1986.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed bowling, and was a huge sports fan. Marge was a member of the Red Hatters and the United Methodist Church, both of Mechanicsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in Marge's honor to the library and the United Methodist Church, both in Mechanicsville.

The family wants to thank the staffs of Keystone Cedars and St. Luke's Hospital Emergency Department, both in Cedar Rapids.
