William "Jerry" White, 78, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 4, 2017, in his home surrounded by his family. He lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. There will be no services per his request. A celebration of life will be held at Hope Lutheran Church on Bowling Street SW from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 11.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carroll A. (Camenisch) White; four children, William J. "Bill" White Jr. (Darcy), Richard White (Kathy Verkamp), Christine Kinnison (Roger) and Lynett White; nine grandchildren, Justin Kinnison (Amber), Amanda Kinnison, Rebeka Reuter (Austin), Jari White (Travis Hays), Haley Kaiser (Kyle), Bianca White (Brad), Gavin White, Jessica Grooters (Tristan) and Nicole Verkamp; five great-grandchildren, Brynn, Lexi, Ryann, Brooke and Easton; a brother, James White (Cheryl); a sister, Pamela White (Doug Spindler); and many amazing and loving nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Shirley Schultz, Barbara Wolfe, Betty Fadley, Sandra Muldoon and Linda White; and two brothers, Sonny White and Patrick White.
Jerry was born May 11, 1939, in Iowa City. He married Carroll on July 15, 1960. He worked for Smulekoff's Furniture, Cedar Rapids Block Co., and retired from Cedar Rapids Community School District after many years. Although he truly never retired, he enjoyed helping others with odd jobs, such as mowing, snow removal and repair work on just about anything. He enjoyed the warmth of the outdoors, fishing (which was rare), definitely spending time at the casinos, and most of all, being with family and friends.
Jerry's family would like to express our deepest appreciation and thanks to the staff at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy and Mercy Hospice staff, who gave the family amazing support and assistance through this peaceful transition. They also would like to thank doctors and staff at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics cancer center, Hall-Perrine Cancer Center and Mercy Medical Center.
