Bill was born Dec. 2, 1923, in Iowa City, the son of Levi and Hazel (Pomeroy) Vorheis. He attended Iowa City schools, graduating from City High School in December of 1941, so he could join the Navy to fight for his country in World War II. Returning to Iowa City, he married Elaine Swails on Feb. 16, 1946. He owned and operated Vorheis Refrigeration for over 40 years.
Bill was a member of the Elks, West Liberty and West Branch golf course clubs. He was a member of many bowling leagues over the years. Many will remember Bill's love of golf and collecting thousands of golf balls over the years. He found relaxation in searching for lost golf balls during his lunch breaks. Bill scored 12 hole-in-ones during his golf days, one of them being at the age of 87!
His family includes two sons and their wives, Dr. Stephen and Rebecca Vorheis and Cary and Tammy Vorheis; three grandchildren, Kiersten Vorheis Kerr (Paul), Amy Petri (Tony) and Andrew; and two great-grandsons, Sullivan Kerr and Alec Petri.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Elaine.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Bill's family and his arrangements.
