William Gerald Suter, 72, of Iowa City, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, April 30, 2017.

Billy was born in Mason City, Iowa, on Oct. 12, 1944, to William (Bud) Suter and Jeanne Riepe Suter. The family moved to Iowa City in 1955. Billy attended Hoover Elementary, Central Junior High and graduated from City High in 1963. He attended the University of Iowa, where he studied zoology. Billy served honorably in the Iowa National Guard for six years. In 1969, he donated a kidney to his father Bud and gave him some of the happiest five years of his life. The family is forever grateful for this selfless gift.

During his many years in the restaurant and bar business, Billy owned and operated several popular establishments in the area. He made many friends, knew everyone in town and had a funny story for each of them. He was kindhearted and generous and was loved by all who knew him. He worked for KCJJ radio station for the last 13 years and is best remembered for being the DJ on the Sunday morning "Oldies" call-in show, which he greatly enjoyed. The show allowed him to keep in touch with all his old friends and play the music he loved. His knowledge of music and music trivia was boundless.

Billy was an avid U.S. coin collector. He loved to read and was a self-taught expert on the Civil War and World War II. He loved old movies, his Iowa Hawkeyes and the Cubs.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lisa.

He is survived by his son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Jennifer; and grandchildren, Haeden, Nicholas and Jack. He is also survived by his siblings, John (Jedn), Cynthia (Ed), Steve (Paula) and Tom (Anne), six nieces and a nephew.
