William L. Shafer, 58, of Winthrop, died Sunday, May 28, 2017, at his home in Winthrop.
Bill was born Sept. 3, 1958, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of William E. and Marcella C. (Landyut) Shafer. He was a 1977 graduate of East Buchanan High School and attended Hawkeye Community College. In 1979, he married Jamie Hare. They made their home in Independence but later were divorced.
On Dec. 28, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nev., Bill married the love of his life Donna "DeAnn" Peyton. They made their home in Winthrop. He worked for several companies throughout his life, John Deere and Pries Manufacturing, but spent the majority of his carrier as a metal fabrication inspector for Ideal Industries in Fayette.
He enjoyed being a "car guy." He spent years as a pit crew member for several racing teams in the area and also drove hobby stock and drag racing cars.
He is survived by his father, William (Jeanice) Shafer, Winthrop; wife, DeAnn, Winthrop; son, Nicholas (Melissa) Shafer, Castle Rock, Colo.; two granddaughters, Annabelle and Addison Shafer, Castle Rock; two sisters, Deb Green, Conrad, and Marilyn (Bill) Crow) Quasqueton; a brother, John (Terri) Shafer, Vinton; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Marcella Shafer; a sister, Jennifer Shafer; and a brother-in-law, Charles Green.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 1, at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Winthrop, with the Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Burial will be held at the Fremont Cemetery in Winthrop, Friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, and from 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.
