William Francis Olinger, Esq., 76, of Sanibel, Fla., died Feb. 25, 2015, at Health Park Memorial Center, Fort Myers, Fla., after a short battle with lung cancer. Celebration of Life services were March 8 in Sanibel, and memorial services will be in June at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
He was born Sept. 16, 1938, in Waterloo, Iowa, a son of Ermin and Augusta (Schares) Olinger. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, University of Iowa class of 1960 and the University of Iowa School of Law class of 1964, with a Juris Doctorate. He served in the Marines Corps. He was a founding partner of Olinger, Sosalla & McManus and later his own firm, William F. Olinger P.C. He was inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocacy.
He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Country Club, Mu Deuteron chapter of Phi Gamma Delta, the McGregor Upper Mississippi Yacht and Boat Club, where he served as commodore, and past board member of the Linn County Historical Society and Tanager Place.
He was a prominent historic preservationist, having preserved and restored four historic houses and two historic churches in Cedar Rapids. He was a trustee of Sny Magill University, South McGregor, Iowa; an honorary member of Corvair Biking Society, and a member of the Beachview tennis team in Sanibel. He loved to play tennis, golf, ski, read, and boat on the Mississippi.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jeannie: two sons, Bill of Sanibel, Fla., and John of Portsmouth, R.I.; two grandchildren, Grayson and Maryn; a sister, Betty Winder (John), and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Olinger, of Cedar Rapids; a niece, Lisa Olinger, and great-nephew, Jack Dickens, of Iowa City; and his dog, McGregor.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry Olinger.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 11, at All Saints Catholic Church, 720 29th St. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403, where the family will receive friends after 10:30 a.m. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Association, St. Mary's Catholic Church, McGregor, or Linn County Historical Society.
