William "Bill" Meyer, 75, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at his home surrounded by family.
A memorial service with military honors celebrating Bill's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Heather Hayes officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories Stateroom.
Survivors include his wife, Paula; son, William (Lori) Meyer of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Rhonda (Jeff) Gandy of Aitkin, Minn.; son, Matthew (Sarah) Todd of Bristol, Wis.; grandchildren, Sean Gandy, Jessica Gandy, Chelsea Leonard and Samantha Meyer; two great- grandchildren, Addison Gandy and Avery Leonard; soon to be born great-grandson, Jackson Mitchel Roers; and siblings, Robert (MaryJo) Meyer of Whittemore, Linda (George) Bargman of Hoover, Ala., and Richard (Paulette) Meyer of Meridian, Idaho.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Myrtle Meyer; and his first wife, Evelyn Meyer.
William Meyer was born Oct. 3, 1941, in Whittemore, the son of William and Myrtle (Barber) Meyer. Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1963. Upon being discharged, he joined the Cedar Rapids Police Department where he served for 20 years and helped to establish the CRPD Honor Guard. Bill and Paula were married Feb. 16, 1985, in Cedar Rapids. During those years, they owned and operated Stained Glass Gallery for 22 years.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an ordained elder and deacon and sang with the chancel choir.
Bill always will be remembered for his "vise-like handshake."
