William D. "Bill" Mattocks, 73, of North Platte, Neb., died Dec. 23, 2017, at Linden Court in North Platte.
He was born on April 16, 1944, in West Union, Iowa, to Wilder and Dorothy (Dohrer) Mattocks. Bill was raised in Wadena, Iowa, and attended school at Valley High School in Elgin, Iowa, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. His 22 years of service with the Navy and Naval Reserve included service during the Vietnam War and Desert Storm.
After his active duty discharge, Bill worked for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad in Marshalltown, Iowa, for 24 years. After Union Pacific acquired Chicago-Northwestern, Bill moved to North Platte, where he worked as a machinist for nine years until his retirement. Bill married Kathleen Myers on April 3, 1999, at Bethel Church in North Platte.
Bill was a member of Bethel E-Free Church, where he was an active member as an usher and helped with AWANA. He was a member of the Gideons and Men in the Gap, and he volunteered with the Lincoln Connection Homeless Shelter and Habitat for Humanity.
Bill was a true man of God, always wanting to get the word of God out to others. He was a very faithful and selfless person who loved to share his faith with others.
Bill loved boating and being on the water and walking his beloved dog, Jaycee, for many miles a day.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Richard "Ram" Myers.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen of North Platte; four children, Missy (Shawn) Stewart of Springville, Iowa, Mary (Chris) Grant of Urbana, Iowa, Matthew (Katie) Mattocks of Akeny, Iowa, and Benjamin Mattocks of Wadena, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Evan Stewart, Cheyenne Mills, Abby (Denziro) Tochi, Kelly Grant, Mason Grant, Rylee Grant, Kathryn Mattocks and Madelyn Mattocks; sister, Diane (Pat) Olson of Cedar Falls, Iowa; brother, Brad (Jerod) Mattocks of Waterloo, Iowa; mother-in-law, Jackie Myers; sisters-in-law, Syrena (Keith) Davis and Stephanie Dilley, all of North Platte; brother-in-law, Kevin (Patty) Myers of Elkhorn; special friends, Roger and Diane Evans of North Platte; and numerous other family members and many friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Gideons.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Bethel Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Dennis Leitner officiating. Inurnment will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors. The memorial book may be signed from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28, at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte, Neb., which is in charge of arrangements.
