William L. Kellogg, 93, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023, at The Gardens in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Bill was born Dec. 2, 1929, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Wellington and Mabel Kellogg. The Kellogg family was blessed with three sons. Bill was the protective big brother. The three of them fought together, took the family pass on the weekends to ride the box cars throughout town, and enjoyed sledding down the Capitol hill.
After graduating high school in Des Moines, Bill began working at Northwestern Bell where he held numerous positions. The building of Interstate 380 brought him and his high school sweetheart to Cedar Rapids. He proudly retired in 1984. After retirement, Bill enjoyed golfing, bowling, making plastic canvas creations and attending his grandchildren’s multitude of athletic events.
Bill married Jessie Burggraaf on July 18, 1948, in Des Moines, Iowa. They had two sons, and many dogs as he couldn’t say no to Jessie. Jessie preceded him in death in 1992. He met his special companion, Beverly Ballard in 1994, through a personal ad he put in the paper. They shared 25-plus years together and enjoyed gambling, shopping, attending grandchildren’s activities, family get-togethers, and decorating their home with over 25 themed Christmas trees each year.
Bill is survived by five grandchildren, Chad (Michele) Kellogg of Marion, Iowa; Bradley Kellogg of Texas; Grant (Jenny) Kellogg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Brett (Lindsay) Kellogg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Michelle (Devon) Christian of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one brother, Dr. Rodrick (Marlys) Kellogg of Burlington, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Barb Kellogg; 11 great-grandchildren; Beverly’s five children, Don (Sally) of Arizona; Ed (Doris) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Judy Kitzmann of Minnesota; Shirley (Ray) Kilts of Fairfax, Iowa; and Nancy (Burt) White of Swisher, Iowa; her 10 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jessie; two sons, Charles and Robert Kellogg; a brother, Robert Kellogg; and special companion, Beverly Ballard.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Bill may be directed to the family.
