Bill was born to William August and Neva Lucille (Steffa) Jahnke on Jan. 25, 1925, in Luzerne, Iowa. He graduated from Van Horne Public Schools in June 1941 and from the University of Iowa (B.S. 1946 and M.S. 1949). He served with the U.S. Army from 1944-46. While at the University of Iowa, he met and courted his wife of 67 years, Helen Marie (Diton).
The Lord blessed them with six children, David Dean (Virginia) Jahnke, Barbara Ann (Steve) Campbell, William Dean Jr. (Jane) Jahnke, Paul Jahnke, Elizabeth Ann (Dan) Colwell and James Alan (Anne) Jahnke. They have 12 grandchildren,
David Jahnke Jr., Chris Jahnke, Megan (Jahnke) Bailey, Chad Campbell, Lisa (Campbell) Kirkpatrick, Aaron Jahnke, Alyson (Jahnke) Beecher, Andrew Jahnke, Rachel Colwell, Matthew Colwell, Samuel Jahnke and Sarah Jahnke. In addition he had 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife, Helen; all of his children; his sister, Jean Thorson; and a stepbrother, Robert Jahnke.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles.
Bill and Helen were charter members of Our
Redeemer Lutheran Church where they regularly worshipped. Bill's physical therapy career was at the University of Iowa's Children's Hospital and the Iowa City VA Health Care System. Outside of raising his family and his faith life, his interests were in gardening and various crafts. His quiet, humble and friendly personality will be missed by all.
