WILLIAM EDWARD "BILL" ZIERATH
Cedar Rapids
William Edward "Bill" Zierath, 64, of Petersburg, Ill., formerly of Springfield, Ill., and Ames, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 8, 2021. Visitation is at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids on Monday, June 14, at 10 a.m., service at
11 a.m.
William was born Nov. 5, 1956, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Donald Walter and Marian Krumrey Zierath. The family moved soon to Ames, Iowa, and later to Springfield, Ill. Bill graduated from Springfield High School, then attended and graduated from University of Illinois with a B.S. in Ecology, Ethology and Evolution. He soon started working for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency where he worked until his retirement in 2015.
Bill's degree carried over to his hobbies and interests. They included planting and caring for prairies; bird, spider, and scorpion identification; canoeing and kayaking; and growing many strange and wonderful plants. He was an intelligent and interesting man with a droll sense of humor, which showed itself in his artwork.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Donald; his grandparents and two uncles. He is survived by his mother, Marian; his brothers, David (Pamela) Larabee-Zierath of West Liberty, Iowa, Mark (Theresa Misgen) Zierath of Grand Marais, Minn., and Paul (Christine) McCune-Zierath of St. Paul, Minn.; and five nieces and nephews.
