William A. Bock Sr., 90, of Iowa City, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, surrounded by his family at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City, with Father John Spiegel officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Iowa Veterans Home.
Bill was born May 18, 1924, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of George and Lillian (Kouba) Bock. Bill was a 1941 graduate of St. Mary's High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in Japan during World War II. Bill married Phyllis Mathes on May 16, 1947, in Iowa City. Bill was a labor foreman for 49 years with Local 1238, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, VFW Post No. 3949 and a honorary life member of American Legion Post No. 17. In 1996, Bill became a Veterans Trail honoree.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; and their four children, William Bock Jr. (Cheryl White), Gary (Jacki) Bock, Timothy Bock (Kandy Cummings), all of Iowa City, and Stephanie (Craig) Newlun of The Woodlands, Texas; eight grandchildren, Brent, Jamie, Adam, Matthew, Maggie, Logan, Garrett and Abbey; and one great-granddaughter, Presley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alice Mary Bock; and brother, John "Jack" Bock.
