William “Bill” Monaghan

William “Bill” Monaghan, 93, died peacefully at the Good Neighbor Home on Thursday, November 2, 2023. He was born on February 27, 1930, to William and Rosalia (Reilly) Monaghan. His childhood was spent on the family farms in the Coggon and Ryan area. Bill was a 1948 graduate of Coggon High School. He was drafted in the Army in 1951 and served in Japan as a tank gunner.
After his discharge in 1953, Bill returned to help his dad at the Midway DX on Highway 13. He also started his farming career as well as doing carpentry work. In 1968 he rented a farm just east of Manchester on the fish hatchery road. He farmed there until 1991 when he purchased a farm east of Delaware. He continued farming until 2004, selling the farm in 2017 and moving to Manchester.
While farming Bill was very active with the Delaware County Cattlemen’s Association. As a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, he lived a faith-based life that encompassed family, friends, army buddies, card club, and neighbors. He enjoyed traveling and took many trips around the country, which included a trip to Ireland with many cousins. He was especially fond of his trips with his fellow army buddies. Bill also enjoyed a good card game, being a member of a card club for over 60 years and looked forward to his monthly card parties. He appreciated his family and was always present at the Monaghan Reunions and any other family gatherings.
Bill is survived by 9 nephews, 3 nieces, 9 first cousins, and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Roberta (Dale) Coleman, Joan (Ed) Frentress, and Paul Monaghan; and nephews Tom Frentress and Ed Coleman.
A special thank you to the Meadows and Good Neighbor Home for the care provided to Bill over the past few years. Also, a special thank you to Care Initiatives Hospice, especially Teresa.
