Wiese, Velma A.
Velma A. Wiese made her peaceful journey to heaven on Thursday, March 4, 2010. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lone Tree at 10:30 a.m., with Father Lou Leonhardt and Carol Kaalberg officiating. Inurnment: Lone Tree Cemetery, with fellowship following at the church.
Velma is survived by three sons, Bill (Nancy) Schreiber of Muscatine, Tom Schreiber of Columbus Junction and Jim Schreiber of Nichols, three daughters, Betty (Bill) Gerot of Iowa City, Pat (Jerry) Sexton of Lone Tree and Becky Green of Lone Tree; sons-in-law, Roger Slycord of Muscatine and Dean Richard of Lone Tree; 21 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew her as “Grandma Gizzard” because of her special hugs to squeeze their gizzard.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; five siblings, Dorthea Piatt, Loretta Noland, Donald Weise, Evelyn Lantz and Miriam Hunter; two daughters, Kathleen Schreiber-Slycord and Mary E. Richard; and a son-in-law, Donald L. Green.
Velma was born in rural Lone Tree on Jan. 10, 1925, to Oscar and Anne Wiese. She graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1943. She owned and operated the Wee Blu Inn in Lone Tree. Later she was employed by Lone Tree Community School for several years as a bus driver. She then worked and retired from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as an attendant for the parking department.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and also was a Johnson County 4-H leader many years ago. Her favorite club was belonging to the “Golden Girls Club” which she was an avid driver for many Saturday night adventures.
Her most precious time was spending time with family and friends, whether it was to play cards or work on her crossword puzzles. She loved to watch Price is Right, The Lawrence Welk Show and the Golden Girls.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Lone Tree Senior Dining, Lone Tree First Responders or St. Mary's Catholic Church.
