Wieneke, Richard D.
Richard D. Wieneke, 82, of West Branch, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in West Branch. The Rev. Greg Steckel will officiate. The family will host a funeral luncheon immediately following the Mass. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. A parish rosary will begin at 4 p.m., with a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m. Burial with full military honors will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City, following the luncheon.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to Iowa City Hospice, Mercy Home Healthcare or St. Bernadette's Church. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
Richard was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Johnson County, the son of Bert and Christine (Wesley) Wieneke. Growing up in Iowa City, Richard graduated from University High School in Iowa City in 1951. He married Mavis Baker June 2, 1953, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. Together they worked, raised their two sons and enjoyed their family. Mavis died in November 1998.
Richard worked for 33 years for the University of Iowa as an area maintenance mechanic, retiring in 1991.
He served with the Iowa National Guard for more than 27 years, retiring as a 1st sergeant. A longtime member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in West Branch, Richard was very active and supportive of the church and had served on the parish council and as a trustee. He was proudly a 57 year member of the Iowa City Eagle's Lodge. Richard was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and was a (football) season ticket holder since 1956.
He is survived by his sons, Steve Wieneke (Pam) of Ankeny and Scott Wieneke (Nanci) of West Branch; his significant other, Arlieta Hamer of West Branch; grandchildren, Beth, Mark, Dirk and Miranda; and sisters, Laurine Fischer and Darlene Mottet, both of Iowa City.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mavis; and a sister, Genevieve Masters.
