Whipple, John William
John William Whipple, 71, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Private inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Lori (Gary) Santos of Avon, Ind.; sons, Keith and William III, both of Cedar Rapids; his brother, Dr. Robert (Sandra) Whipple of Wonder Lake, Ill.; and his aunt, Dorothy Buss of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John was born July 5, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the beloved son of William P. and Gayle (Schroeder) Whipple. John was a graduate of Monmouth and Rockford colleges.
A devoted schoolteacher, John taught social studies for 23 years at Johnson Elementary and McKinley Middle School in Cedar Rapids. In addition, he was an educator in Leaf River, Ill., and Kualapuu, Hawaii.
John enjoyed spending time with his family, collecting first-day covers and traveling.
Memorials may be made to The American Heart Association, the Cedar Rapids School District Foundation or to a charity of the donor's choosing.
