Wetherell, Sharon Kay 'Kate'
Sharon Kay “Kate” Wetherell, 71, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012.
She was born Oct. 11, 1941, in Imogene, Iowa, daughter of Willard H. Wetherell and Lois Parker Wetherell. Sharon graduated from Farragut High School in 1959 and received a B.A. in teaching from State College of Iowa (now University of Northern Iowa) in 1962. Ms. Wetherell taught junior high English in Eagle Grove, Iowa from 1962-1965 and in Austin, Minn., from 1965-1970. In 1971, she received an M.A. in library science from UNI and was employed by Cedar Rapids Schools as a media resource specialist at Polk Elementary School from 1971-1986, and at Johnson School of the Arts from 1986 until her retirement in 2001.
Ms. Wetherell was an incredible person who provided an inspiration for reading and a love of learning to her students. Her greatest honor was receiving the 1990 Distinguished Teacher Award from the University of Iowa.
In addition to being a longtime member of Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library, she also served on the boards of the Iowa Educational Media Association, YWCA, United Way, Arc of East Central Iowa, Cedar Rapids Public Library, Johnson School of the Arts, and the Beaver Creek Condominium Association. She enjoyed regular lunches out with friends, reading, book clubs, crossword puzzles, scrabble, and other word games and puzzles.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Sharon is survived by her brother, Dennis (Sally) Wetherell of Cedar Falls; nephews, David (Melinda) Wetherell of Cedar Rapids and Donald Wetherell of Cedar Falls; and grandnephews, Bailey and Parker Wetherell of North Liberty.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Lois Wetherell.
Memorials may be directed to Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Per her wishes, her body was cremated.
