WESLEY DEAN FINKLE
Cedar Rapids
Wesley Dean Finkle, 94, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Dec. 24, 2021, at Keystone Cedars under their care and of Avalon Hospice. Wesley was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Corning, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Hazel (Adams) Finkle. Wes graduated from Corning High School in 1945 and entered the Air Force and attended radioman school. He was honorably discharged in 1950.
Wes was employed as a government inspector. He was assigned to Dubuque for a couple of years, then to Collins Radio in the Civil Service Division until he retired in 1994. While employed there he also met his bride-to-be, Maycel Zrudsky, and they were married in 1969. Wes was a 70-year-member of the Masons and the American Legion.
Wes enjoyed snow and water skiing (teaching his stepdaughters and nephew Brian), RVing, travel, board games, hunting and fishing. He also treated his nephew to a trip to the Boundary Waters area for his graduation gift. Memories very dear to both. During his time at Keystone, he became known as the "puzzle man," for many stopped by the table checking out what puzzle he was working on next.
He is survived by his stepdaughters, Judy (Bob) Houlahan of Cedar Rapids, Penny (John) Coleman of Urbandale and Becky (Duane) Sytsma of North Liberty; sister-in-law, Shirley Finckle of Marshalltown; nephew, Brian (Barbara) Finkle of Fort Collins, Colo.; five grandchildren, Sean (Kate) Houlahan, Cedar Rapids, Eric (Marsha) Coleman, Waukee, Amy (Tony) Ward, Urbandale, James (Colleen) Rivera, North Liberty, and Nathan (Heather) Sytsma, Marion; and 11 great-grandchildren, Kylie, Caden, Ivy, Jessica, Cameron, Mason, Nina, Trent, Makayla, Jordy and Alexis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maycel (Vargason, Zrudsky) Finkle; brother, Robert Finkle; son-in-law, John Coleman; and grandson-in-law, Dan Smith.
Our sincere and grateful thanks to the caring staff at Keystone Cedars and to the amazing comforting Angels of Avalon Hospice.
A private family service is planned.
