Werning, Viola
Viola Werning, 98, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at Rock Ridge Residential Care in Shellsburg following an extended illness. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at St. John Lutheran Church, Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment: St. John Cemetery, Newhall. Friends may call at Phillips Family Center, 605 Second Ave., Vinton, from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial fund has been established.
Viola was born March 9, 1912, in rural Vinton, to Charles and Mary (Abraham) Knuth, and graduated in 1930 from the Vinton High School. She taught in country school in Eden Township from 1930 to 1935 before her marriage. On Feb. 16, 1935, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Werning at St. John Parsonage in Eldorado Township. The couple farmed and made their home on the family farm for 29 years until retiring to Newhall in 1964. Lloyd preceded his wife in death in 1987.
She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church and her community.
Viola is survived by her sons, Russel Werning and Glenn (Marjorie) Werning, both of Newhall; her grandchildren, Dave (Lynnette) Werning, Mary Shepherd, Becky Weidenhamer, Greg (Tami) Werning, Gene (Andrea) Werning and Barry (Brenda) Werning; and her great-grandchildren, Austin and Mason Weidenhamer and Samantha, Madison, Nathan and Danielle Werning.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Alice Werning.
