Werning, Lucille
Lucille Werning, 89, of Dassel, Minn., passed away peacefully Feb. 22, 2010, at Lakeview Ranch after a courageous battle with dementia.
Lucille was born Oct. 5, 1920, the eighth of nine children of Joseph and Mary Becker Pieper on the family farm near Van Horne. She graduated from Newhall High School in 1937 and married William F. Werning at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne on Nov. 25, 1941. After marriage, Bill and Lucille lived in Cedar Rapids and she became a homemaker to begin raising five children. From Cedar Rapids they moved to Van Horne, Ida Grove, Eldora, De Witt, Albia, and to Keota in 1967. She moved to Martina Place, Johnston, in 2006 and Lakeview Ranch, Dassel, Minn., in 2008.
Lucille had several interests and particularly enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, baking, gardening, canning, flowers, attending daily mass, reading, playing bridge, crossword puzzles, and spoiling her cat Clara.
Her memberships included Holy Trinity Parish, St Mary's Altar and Rosary Society and the prayer line, Fortnightly Club, bridge club, Lagos Acres and the library board.
Survivors include sons, Bill (Wendy) of Vienna, Va., and Larry (Jean) of Clinton; daughters, Mary (Mike) Earley of West Des Moines and Ann (Tom) Kopf of Hutchinson, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Debra Werning of Montezuma; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Fred of Tama; many nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Marian Werning of Lakewood, Colo.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill in 1995; son, John “Jack” in 1990; brothers, Eldon (Zora), Louis (Alice), Joseph (Arlene) and George (Genevieve); sisters, Hazel (Jim) Reardon, Louise (Francis) Donnelly and Rozella (Clarence and Delbert) Duncalf; sister-in-law, Helen Pieper; brothers-in-law, Kenneth and Gerald Werning: and brother- and sister-in-law, John and Mildred Hinrichs.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on March 4 at Holy Trinity Parish - St Mary's Catholic Church in Keota with the Rev. Bernard Weir officiating. Inurnment will follow at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. March 4.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dementia Foundation, Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association or Holy Trinity Parish.
