Wendel, Elvera Doretta Weber 'Auntie El'
Elvera Doretta Weber “Auntie El” Wendel, 85, died Monday, June 6, 2011, in her Mechanicsville home. Funeral service 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morgan Funeral Choices, Mount Vernon, by the Rev. Barbara Krueger. El's visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville.
Surviving El is daughter, Barb (Larry) Lovell, Mechanicsville; two granddaughters, Brenda (Matt) Path, Mount Vernon, and Julie Lovell, Stanwood; grandson, Bryan (Jody) Lovell, Mechanicsville; and five great-grandchildren, Zach, Chelsea and Elizabeth Lovell, and Brianna and Kaitlyn Tenney.
El is also survived by three brothers, Donald (Wanda) Weber, Willie (Betty) Weber, Mechanicsville, and Harold (Janice) Weber, Springville; one sister, Sherry (Lynn) Hanks, Mechanicsville; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding El in death were her parents; husband, Walt; four brothers, Dennis, LuVerne, Kenneth and Merle Weber; three sisters, LaVonne Weber, Carol Lovell and Mert Scott; and a great-grandson, Cody Path.
Auntie El was born August 17, 1925, in Le Mars, Iowa, the second oldest child of Henry C. and Emma Dircks Weber. She married Walter T. Wendel on Oct. 20, 1945, in Hawarden, Iowa. He died March 18, 1984. El and her family moved to Mechanicsville in 1955, from Hudson, S.D., where they farmed. She worked for many years for local businesses in Mechanicsville. Elvera was a member of the Royal Neighbors' of America and volunteered at the Mechanicsville Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Grannie loved children, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and “her little neighbors.” She liked to be outdoors and especially gardening.
