Weldon, Colleen Mary Soukup
Colleen Mary Soukup Weldon was born May 20, 1929, in Dubuque, Iowa, and was adopted by George and Genevieve Soukup of Iowa City, at the age of four. She graduated from Parnell High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Before her marriage, she taught at rural schools. Colleen was united in marriage to John Francis Weldon on Nov. 8, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. While raising their children, Colleen also found time to work at the Weldon Oil Station in Parnell, Holden Seed Co. in Williamsburg and in the 1970s served as a site manager for the HACAP Senior Dining program in Parnell until retiring in 2001. They lived in Parnell until moving to the farm south of town in 1959. Colleen remained on the farm after Frank's death in 1996, until she moved to the English Valley Care Center in North English in 2010. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell where she was active in the Altar and Rosary Society and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Parnell.
Colleen enjoyed traveling, going to casinos, playing poker, shopping and she will be remembered for her great sense of humor. Colleen died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at the English Valley Care Center at the age of 84 years.
Colleen is survived by five children, Stephen (Linda) Weldon of Slater, Marie Weldon of San Antonio, Texas, Mark (Karla) Weldon of Edgemont, S.D., Rose Weldon of Seal Beach, Calif. and Matt Weldon (Greg Bergford) of San Francisco, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Katie Brown, Ellen Goettsch, Neil Goettsch, Kyle Steffen, Mackenzie Steffen, Mallory Steffen, Faith Steffen, Bart Weldon, Travis Weldon and Tara Kiser; three great-grandchildren, Brayden Weldon, Jayla Steffen and Ava Weldon; a brother-in-law, Clement (Audrey) Weldon of North English; and a sister-in-law, Rita Murphy of Williamsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and an infant daughter, Barbara Ellen.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Father Joseph Roost will preside. A private family burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Parnell. Visitation will from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m.
Memorials are for St. Joseph Cemetery or English Valley Care Center.
Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg are in charge of arrangements.
