Joy Weiler
(1925-2013)
A life and career in music was concluded Dec. 27, 2013, with the death of Joy Weiler of Cedar Rapids.
Weiler was born Oct. 16, 1925, in Toledo, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Rose Hofer. There, she attended school and began her musical training, later earning a degree from the Iowa State Teachers College.
She was preceded in death by an infant son and her parents, but is survived by two children, also musicians, Jeff Weiler of Chicago and Dr. Kristana Weiler of Cedar Rapids.
The last 25 years of Joy's career, until just before her death, were spent at the piano of the Cedar Rapids Marriott Hotel. Before that she lived in Traer, Iowa, but traveled to work with many notables of radio, television, and music, including Arthur Godfrey, Ken Curtis (best known as “Festus” of TV's Gunsmoke), Anita Bryant, Pat Boone, Jackie Gleason's sidekick Frank Fontaine, a number of personalities of the Lawrence Welk Show, as well as seasoned vaudevillians who still toured the “fair circuit” in the 1960s and ‘70s. For 23 years, Weiler was organist of the National Cattle Congress in Waterloo. In addition she played for hundreds of pageants, horse shows and county and state fairs around the Midwest.
Hers was a life in music well lived.
