Wefel, James S.
James S. Wefel, 65, of Iowa City, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012. The family will greet friends Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. The family will host a celebration of Jim's life at their home, 926 Estron St., in Iowa City, from 4 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials be directed to The James S. Wefel Memorial Fund, c/o the U of I Foundation, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, IA 52244-4550.
Jim was born March 10, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Paul S. and Hilda A. (Unger) Wefel. He was a professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Division of Cariology, director of the Dows Institute for Dental Research, and administrative director of the Office of Clinical Research at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jan of Iowa City; two sons, Jeff (Kelie) Wefel and their son, Gavin of Houston, Texas, and Jay (Kara) Wefel and their daughter, Sophia, of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, John (Sandra) Wefel of Baton Rouge, La., and Peter (Molly) Wefel of Columbus, Ohio; and two nephews, Paul and Mark.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
