Weatherwax, Alyce A.
Alyce A. Weatherwax, 94, of Clarence, died Sunday, March 11, 2012, at the Clarence Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Clarence United Methodist Church, with Carol Mart and Karme Jamison officiating. Burial will be in Clarence Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Chapman Funeral Home, Clarence. Online condolences may be sent to . In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Edna Zybell Library, Clarence, or the Clarence Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 14, 1917, north of Clarence, Iowa, to Glen and Elizabeth (Spear) Kelly. She married Richard Weatherwax, a neighbor, on Nov. 19, 1939, and they were the first couple married in the Clarence United Methodist Church.
Alyce graduated from Clarence High School in 1935. She was on the basketball team that went to the state champion tournament in 1935. Alyce was a true farm housewife, and very active in the community and church, the women's society and other church activities. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Alyce and her sister, Donna, swam across the Mississippi River at the widest point, at Moline, Quad Cities, and with the current, it took them over seven miles downstream to cross. Challenges were never a concern.
Alyce is survived by her son, Tom (Kay) Weatherwax of Logansport, Ind,; daughter, Sally Sawyer of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Todd (Jill) Sawyer, Stanwood, Gina Tasler, Phoenix, Ariz., Steve Drye, Michelle Hage, Kris (Harrison) Chauncy, David (Shanon) Drye, all of Indianapolis, Ind., Kevin (Beth) Weatherwax of Logansport, Ind., and Craig (Lori) Weatherwax of Maryland; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Donna Hart in December 1989; and her husband in December 2000.
