Wayne Kenneth Meier Sr., "Mac Daddy," of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids surrounded by his children. Memorial service: 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, with visitation one hour before the service.
Wayne was born Feb. 15, 1931, the son of John and Eldora (Schafer) Meier in Napoleon, N.D. He was united into marriage to his high school sweetheart, Beverly Spacek, on Aug. 11, 1951, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1941 then went on to serve his country in the Korean War. He was assigned to heavy artillery Howitzer and discharged four years later as a sergeant first class. Wayne spent 45 years at Iowa Manufacturing before retiring.
He enjoyed boxing, horseback riding, wine making, traveling, camping with friends and family, Lake of the Ozarks and origami folding. Wayne also enjoyed watching local softball games, playing with his cats and spending a lot of time with his family and friends. He leaves behind Inky, his pet cat, and Peaches, his Sun Conure bird.
Wayne's favorite saying was, "Never fear when a Meier is near, he'll take care of you with a cheer."
Survivors include his three children, Kathy Aller of Cedar Rapids, Karey McCarthy of Hartland, Wis., and Wayne (Jackie) Meier Jr. of Marion; three grandchildren, Lisa (Justin) Pichler of Menomonee Falls, Wis., Chelsey (Jeremy) Oberreuter of Cedar Rapids and Curtis (Betsy King) Meier of Marion; three great-grandchildren, Brady and Bryce Pichler of Menomonee Falls, Wis., and Tavan Oberreuter of Cedar Rapids; brother, Al (Dolores) Meier of Cedar Rapids; sister, Marilyn Keister of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law, Doreen Meier of Cedar Rapids, Barbara Falvey of Albuquerque, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews across the country.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; parents; brother, Bob Meier; and brother-in-law, Don Keister.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
