Wayne Eugene Severtson, 86, of Marion, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, with a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. A Graveside Service will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
Wayne was born on August 17, 1939, in New Providence, Iowa, the son of Joris and Bernice (Olson) Severtson. He was a graduate of McCallsburg High School and then earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Pittsburg State University in Kansas. He went on to earn a Master’s in Education and an Education Specialist Degree from Iowa State University. On June 11, 1966, Wayne was united in marriage to Nancy J. Houser in Clarion, Iowa.
A dedicated educator, leader, and beloved member of his community, Wayne began his career as a high school English teacher and basketball coach, where he inspired many students through his passion for education and sports. Wayne later served as a principal and ultimately superintendent of schools in both Iowa and Montana. He retired in 2001, after 34 years of dedicated service to the field of education.
In addition to his educational accomplishments, Wayne honorably served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. Wayne's contributions to his community were not limited to education and military service. He served on the Yellowstone Board of Health in Montana, was actively involved in various church boards and Rotary. Outside of his professional and community obligations, Wayne was known for his love of music, particularly playing the piano. Wayne leaves behind a legacy of educational excellence, community service, and a deep love for family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Wayne is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 60 years, Nancy Severtson; two children, Julie (Tim) Trepa of Boone, Iowa, and Eric (Molly) Severtson of Helena, Montana; five granddaughters, Melissa (Josh) Denzer, Melanie (Tim) Phillips, Sonja Severtson, Anja Severtson, and Brynja Severtson; one great-grandson, Theodore Wayne Phillips; and stepsister, Susan Cook of Ankeny, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jerrol; and three sisters, JoAnn, Susan, and Jeanne.
