Warren C. Richart Sr., 90, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 East Sixth St. in Vinton. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Walter J. Meyocks Post 264 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors at Urbana Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, also at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
Warren was born May 22, 1926, in Shellsburg to Allen and Dorothy (Senft) Richart. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1943. On Dec. 9, 1951, he married Mary Brehm at the home of Willard and Gertrude Smith in Brandon.
Warren served his nation in the U.S. Army 63rd Infantry Division during World War II. He was a member of the Walter J. Meyocks American Legion Post 264 for over 70 years. For 24 years, Warren was employed as an electrician at Iowa Manufacturing, and served as Benton County treasurer for 24 years. Always active in politics, he was inducted into the Benton County Democratic Party Hall of Fame this past year.
Warren also served in many offices at the Urbana Christian Church, where he was a lifelong member. He also served on the Urbana Cemetery Association Board, was a member of the Urbana Lions Club and, for 32 years, he served on the USA Communications Board of Directors in Shellsburg.
Warren is survived by his wife, Mary of Urbana; his children, Teresa (Jeff) Smalley of Fairfax and Warren (Becki) Richart Jr. of Urbana; his grandchildren, Mindy (Matt) Thornton, Allen (Shelly) Richart, Trisha Richart, Shadowe (Taylor) Vogt, Dakota Vogt, Matt (Elainia) Smalley and Sara Rilling; his great-grandchildren, Jensen Thornton, Karah Richart, Brynlee Rilling and Vincent Smalley; his sisters, Pat Peters of Shellsburg and Judy (Keith) Kramer of Urbana; and his sister-in-law, Bonnie Richart of Vinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Myron "Mike" Richart.
