He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bernadine of North English; a daughter, Carolyn (Michael) Elwood of North English; a son, Lloyd (Jane) Warner of Solon; granddaughters, Kathryn (Joseph) Moreland of Iowa City, Beth (Daniel) Faidley of Fishers, Ind., and Anne (Jeff) Gross of Weldon Spring, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Meg, Charlie and Jack Moreland, Alex, Mary and Ryan Faidley, and Bill Gross; nieces, Diane (Howard) Rattner of Cedar Rapids, and Linda (Russ Lambert) Chapman of Valley, Neb.; brother-in-law, Norman (Joan) McCombs of Deep River; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Delbert) Gilmore of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Fern Crawley and her husband, J.C.
Stanley was born on July 26, 1927, on a farm east of North English, Iowa, a son of Earl and Lena Brown Warner. He graduated from North English High School in 1945, and soon after proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy. On Sept. 1, 1945, he married Bernadine L. McCombs in Oskaloosa. When the war ended, Stanley returned to the family farm near Green Valley. In later years, he worked as a carpenter in the North English and Iowa City areas. He was a school bus driver for English Valleys Schools for several years. Stanley was a champion archer and lifelong hunter. He was the Iowa State Archery Champion numerous times and in 1967 won the title of National Field Archery Champion. He was an Iowa State Archery Association Hall of Fame member because of his “dedication to others in the sport of archery, by serving on the ISAA Board of Governors, teaching the young and old by setting an example of good sportsmanship for others to follow.” Stanley was a member of the Iowa County Archers and a 60 year member of the American Legion. He enjoyed the friendship of many and his quick wit and amazing sense of humor will be missed by all of his family and friends.
The family would like to thank all of the medical personal who cared for Stanley during the past 21 years, especially Dr. James Schlichtmann and his staff at North English Family Practice and Iowa County nurse Nancy Achenbach.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the English Valleys School, the Iowa County Archers and the English Valleys History Center.
