Walters, Lawrence 'Whitey'
Lawrence “Whitey” Walters, 78, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Mercy Iowa City following a sudden illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Phillips and the Rev. Thomas Doyle officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Whitey was born Dec. 24, 1934, in Oxford, Iowa, the son of Fred and Nora Walters. He was a graduate of Iowa City High School and served in the United States Army in Korea from 1954-1956. On May 16, 1957, Whitey married Mary Ann Mougin at St. Peter's Church, Cosgrove, Iowa.
Whitey was a gas crew leader at Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric for 43 years before retiring in 1995. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, American Legion Post 17, Fraternal Order of Eagles and VFW Post 2581. Whitey liked to play cards, fish, hunt, and most importantly spend time with family and friends.
Whitey is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, and their son, Duane “Wally”; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ruth Walters, Mildred Walters, Edward Mougin, Victor (Leona) Mougin, Frank (Vivian) Mougin, Charles (Sandy) Mougin, Juanita (Harold) Hunter and Darlene Kabela; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Whitey was preceded by his parents; four siblings, Velma Walters, Dorothy Gunderson, Willard “Curly” Walters and Melvin Walters; and sister and brother-in-law, Jean Mougin and Frank Kabela.
