Walter (Walt) Allen Hill of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2018, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Immaculate Conception Church. Friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Walt was born March 10, 1933, in Iowa City, Iowa, to George and Lillian Hill.
He married Mary Patricia Barker on Aug. 7, 1954. Walt graduated from Franklin High School with his many friends. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. Walt retired after a 35-year career in the auto glass industry. He also spent countless hours assisting his wife, Pat, with her business, the Antique Wicker Hill & Tea Room.
When not working, Walt enjoyed spending time with all of his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed going to the races at Hawkeye Downs, where he was inducted into the Hawkeye Downs Racing Wall of Fame. In 2014, Walter was thrilled to go on the Honor Flight.
Walt is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Pat; his children, Joe (Yolanda) Hill, Kay (Mike) Meaney, Dennis (Joan Schlenk) Hill, Greg (Renee) Hill and Bill (Lisa) Hill; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Harold, Cleo, Naomi, George, Richard, Betty, James and Mahlon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
Walt will be greatly missed by all those who loved him and had the opportunity to know him and be a part of his life.
