After a courageous battle with cancer, Walter G. Long passed away in Apache Junction, Ariz., on Feb. 10, 2015, at age 75. A memorial service will be 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point.
Walter spent the first 15 years of his life on the family farm and attended Oneida Consolidated Schools. On Jan. 2, 1955, the family moved to rural Colesburg, where he graduated with the class of 1957. On July 9, 1960, he was united in marriage with Linda Tenney, the daughter of Hugh A. and Mildred J. Tenney, at Volga United Methodist Church in Volga. They made their home in rural Colesburg, where Walter owned a custom shelling business. He worked for Edgewood Feed Mill until December 1968, at which time he and his wife, Linda, purchased a farm near Strawberry Point, where he resided at the time of his death.
He served on the Central Community school board and several different committees and boards in the United Methodist Church. Walter was a New York Life and Farmer's Mutual insurance agent and enjoyed spending his summers walking through fields adjusting hail claims.
Walter was a lifelong lover of horses. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their home in Iowa and their winter home in Arizona.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Long; children, Lori (Jeff) Robinson, Daniel (Dawn) Long, Kari (Jim Sullivan) Long and Walt Long; brother, Ed Long; and sisters, Kathryn Chopra and Judy Hanson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George V. and Ila Long; and sister, Alice Long.
