WALTER HEDRICK
North English
Walter Hedrick, 92, died March 29, 2016, at English Valleys Care Center in North English.
Walter was born Aug. 17, 1923, in Hiteman, Iowa, the son of Walter and Margaret Linebaugh Hedrick. He attended rural schools near Knoxville and moved with his family to a farm near Parnell in 1939. He attended high school in Parnell, where he graduated in 1942.
Walter entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in World War II with the 10th Mountain Division in the European Theater of Operations. He was discharged in June 1946.
On June 6, 1948, he was united in marriage to Charlene Morrison in North English. They lived in Cedar Rapids, where their daughter, Linda, was born. Walter worked at the body and fender trade at Culver Motors and later at Allis-Chalmers Manufact-uring. In 1953, he returned to North English where he farmed.
After his retirement in 1986, his time was filled with hunting, fishing, reading and enjoying time with his grandsons. When his wife, Charlene, became ill, he spent his time caring for her. They both continued to visit family, including their great-grandson, Zach. After Charlene passed, Walt enjoyed his North English friends, especially his coffee buddies at the malt shop.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Linda (Curt) Schroeder of West Des Moines; his grandson, Mike (Sarah) Burggraaf, and great-grandsons, Zach, Drew and Jake of Clive; grandson, Colin Schroeder of Plano, Texas; great-granddaughter, Alice Schroeder of Ankeny; nieces, Gay Moffit and Margaret (Hugh) O'Donnell; and nephews, Bill Hedrick and Paul Woody.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene; his parents; his brothers, Everett, Herbert and Homer; his sister, Irene Woody; and nephew, Ronald Woody.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Powell Funeral Home, North English. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 6:30 p.m., with the Rev. Michelle Williamson officiating. Burial will be in North English Cemetery.
