WALTER JOSEPH DROLL
Clarence
Walter Joseph Droll, 91, of Clarence, went to his final resting place on Tueday, Dec. 6, 2016, after a short illness. Funeral Mass services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tipton, officiated by Father Richard Okumu. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Tipton. Friends and family may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton with a rosary starting at 3:30 p.m.
Walter was born on the home farm in Riverside, Iowa, on June 20, 1925, to Jerome and Genevieve (Knebel) Droll. Walter attended country school and St. Mary's High School in Riverside. After graduating, he helped his mother and uncle farm due to his father's passing. He went on to operate a Texaco gas station in Hills and worked as a hired farm hand. In 1953, he moved to rural Cedar County and worked with Henry and Esther Von Muenster on the farm which he later purchased.
Walter was united in marriage to Eleanor Ann Ruth at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside on Oct. 11, 1948. They moved to rural Stanwood where they raised their seven children. Walter was very passionate about his farming and he was sharp with a great memory right up until his passing. If there were any dates that you needed to know, just ask Walter, as he would walk over to the corn crib or the machine shed door and it would be written right there! He had a knack for remembering dates!
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tipton, Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Church Council, Tipton Moose Lodge and served on the Clarence Cooperative board. One of Walter's favorite hobbies was playing cards with his siblings and family. There was never a family event that he missed! Walter considered his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to be his greatest blessings.
Walter is survived by his four daughters, Janet (Gary) Pasold, Clarence, JoEllen (Mark) Cook, Mechanicsville, Julie (Mike) Tharp, Lowden, and Jacqueline (Scott) Bohlen, Durant; and three sons, Jerry (Mary) Droll, Clarence, John (Deb) Droll, Ridgedale, Mo.; and James (Kay) Droll, Stanwood. Also surviving are his sister, Veva (Droll) Jenn, Riverside; his brother, Reno Droll, Tipton; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eleanor; his grandson, Jayce; brothers, Vern and Ivo Droll; and sisters, Evelyn Schnoebelen, Luella Beranek and infant sister Delores.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to St. Mary's Church, Tipton; Father Eugene Benda Knights of Columbus Council No. 11468, Tipton; or Clarence Assisted Living.
Walter was a genuinely caring and giving person and will be missed by many family members and countless friends, especially his dear caregivers at the Clarence Assisted Living.
The family would like to thank the Clarence Assisted Living for their compassionate care.
