Walker, Gordon
Gordon Walker, 95, a longtime Cedar Rapids resident and veteran of World War II, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, in the Meth-Wick Community Woodlands Care Center. Mr. Walker was born July 25, 1914, in Oelwein, Iowa, to Harold Nightingale Walker and Nelcina Ballman. He married Ruth Rich in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945, with two years in England beginning in 1943. He was a staff sergeant in the 385th Bomber Group who serviced B-17s as a turret and bombsight technician.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance and Eby's Sporting Goods and volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; son, Timothy (Wanita) of Independence, Mo.; daughters, Catherine of Broomfield, Colo., and Margaret (Eric Hendrickson) of St. Paul, Minn.; son, Jonathan (Karen) of Sioux Falls, S.D.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Marjorie (Stan) Steinkamp of Urbana, Ill.; brother, David (Marilyn) of Bloomington, Ill.; and sister-in-law, Lela Walker of Waterloo.
Visitation, with family members, will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4200 First Ave NE, Cedar Rapids. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to support St. Paul's Church or the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
