Vrba, Wilmer J.
Wilmer J. Vrba, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, July 4, 2010, in his home peacefully from prostate cancer, with his family by his side. Graveside services: noon Wednesday at Czech National Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his son; Bill Vrba and wife Mary Kay of Cedar Rapids; a daughter-in-law, Chris Vrba of Robins; his grandchildren, Scott Vrba and wife Lisa of Cedar Rapids, Michael A. Vrba Jr. and wife Bonnie of Cedar Rapids, Danelle A. Vrba of Robins, John W. Vrba of Robins, and Amanda D. Vrba of Robins; and his great-grandchildren, Cameron Newgaard of Cedar Rapids, Vincent Vrba of Cedar Rapids, Jacob Vrba of Cedar Rapids, Maxine Vrba of Robins, and Bradley Vrba of Robins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Lorraine Vrba; his son, Michael A. Vrba Sr.; and a brother, Clarence Vrba.
Wilmer was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Joseph and Emma Prochaska Vrba. He married Alice Lorraine Wiggins on Aug. 7, 194,5 in Seminole, Okla. Wilmer was a fireman for the city of Cedar Rapids, and a member of the American Legion. He and Alice enjoyed square dancing, which he taught and was an accomplished caller. Wilmer enjoyed the outdoors and his dogs. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Wilmer served in the Navy during World War II. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post # 5.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of Mercy for all the loving care they gave to Wilmer.
