Voss, Elaine Jean
Elaine Jean Voss, 81, of Palo, died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Jude Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, where friends may visit Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m., and Monday at the church after 9 a.m.
Born in Atkins, Iowa, on April 13, 1930, Elaine was the daughter of Orvie E. and Rose (Schueler) Risdal. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins. On April 16, 1955, she married Francis Daniel Voss at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fairfax. The family later became active members of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. For many years Elaine taught religious education classes.
Elaine graduated from Atkins High School in 1947 and was employed by insurance companies until her marriage. She then worked on the family farm and was later employed by Feiereisen, Inc. Elaine served on the Linn County Board of Review from 1998-2010.
She is survived by her children and grandchildren: Dan (Susan) Voss of Atkins, and their children, Daniel, Brian and Matthew; Jeanne Wampler of Cedar Rapids; Ellen (Jim) McDonald of Robins, and their children, Dan (fiancee Amy Miller), Megan and John; Tom (Jill) Voss of Hiawatha, and their children, Elise, Madison and Derrick; Jim (Tammy) Voss of Marion, and their children, Ashley (husband Mike Keesy), Andrew (fiancee Melissa Collum), Josh and Caitlin; two great-grandchildren, Grayson Keesy and Bethany McDonald; brother, Don Risdal; sister-in-law, Mary Voss; as well as her cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Mike Wampler; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Regis and Mardi Voss and Joan Risdal; and nephew, David Voss.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Atkins Improvement Mission (public library), St. Jude's Catholic Church, and the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
