Vivian M. Hickey, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Jan. 7, 2018, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. Teahen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family.
Vivian is survived by her sons, William Hickey of Cedar Rapids and Frank (Rhonda) Hickey of Mendota Heights, Minn.; grandchildren, Carrie Blackford, Liam Hickey, Parker Hickey and Sean Hickey; and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn.
Vivian Mary was born Aug. 11, 1926, the daughter of Frank and Geneva Meyer Uriell on the family farm in Clayton County. She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in Garnavillo and Clarke University in Dubuque. Vivian married Glenn Hickey in Garnavillo, taught at various community schools throughout Clayton County and owned Hickey's Grocery in Garnavillo. She then moved to Cedar Rapids and returned to teaching at St. Patrick Catholic School, retiring in the mid 1970s. Vivian was well regarded by students, and long after retirement it was not uncommon for former students to visit her.
Vivian was a loving mother, a terrific grandmother and true friend to those who knew her. She was keenly interested in the activities of her grandchildren, politics and social issues and was the true center of her family. She was an excellent cook and baked bread from scratch regularly. Vivian will be remembered for her good humor, strong sense of social justice and good works.
Known as the keeper of family history, Vivian had an extensive memory of her family history and loved to tell stories about it. Although she was an only child, she fostered and enjoyed close, loving relationships with many cousins. Vivian will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank Vivian's caregivers at Mercy Medical Center and at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
