Virginia M. (Hillmer) Young, 91, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, July 3, 2014. Visitation will be at Cedar Memorial West-side Chapel from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 6, and one hour before the service. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, at First Lutheran Church, officiated by Pastor Randy Kasch of Gloria Dei Luth-eran Church and Pastor Craig Brown of First Lutheran, with music by Pastor Kay Slocum.
Virginia was born Oct. 26, 1922, to Fredrick and Anna (Volz) Hillmer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1940 and then from Cedar Rapids Business College. On Nov. 11, 1944, she married Charles E. Young of Enid, Okla., in Riverside, Calif., while he was stationed there with the Army Air Corps. After graduation, she began working at Cherry Burrell. After raising her family, she returned to work as a secretary at Tyler and Madison elementary schools, then 27 years as a secretary at the board of education.
Virginia was a Boy Scout den mother for her sons and a Blue Bird leader for her daughters. Upon retirement she volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital and in the office at First Luth-eran Church for many years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church since age 5, St. Luke's Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 572, Suburban co-workers, Keen Agers and St. Pat's Bridge Club, as well as many other card playing groups.
She is survived by four children, Donald (Donna) Young of Fairfax, David Young of Cedar Rapids, Dianna An-dersen of Chanhassen, Minn., and Darla (Tom) Godfrey of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Kyle (Edina) Young of West Palm Beach, Fla., Kevin (Rebecca) Young of Durant, Katie (Rob) Gerdts and Thomas Andersen of Minneapolis, Gwyndolyn Godfrey and Heather Lantz of Cedar Rapids, and Jennifer Matthiessen and Stephanie Larson of Cedar Rapids; 11 great-grandchildren, Mychaela, Emma, Jonathan, Anna, Natalia, Milla, Aubrey, Claire, Nolan, Shelby and Shannon; one great-great-granddaughter, Addilyn; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Young; parents, Fred and Anna Hillmer; two sisters, and spouses, Evelyn (Paul) Levsen and Dorthee (Eldon) Stepanek; a brother and spouse, Donald (Joyce) Hillmer; and a son-in-law, Ronald Andersen.
The family would like to thank all of the many caregivers who assisted with her care from Home Instead, UnityPoint Home Health, UnityPoint Palliative Care and UnityPoint Hospice.
