Virginia "Ginny" O'Donnell, 86, died peacefully Monday, April 6, 2015, at Mercy Hospice. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, April 13, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick's Church or Iowa City Hospice.Ginny was born May 21, 1928, in Harper, Iowa, the daughter of John and Clara Ann Sondag Redlinger. She was a graduate of St. Elizabeth High School in Harper and the Mercy School of Nursing. On Dec. 30, 1950, Virginia married Robert "Mort" O'Donnell in Harper. Ginny was employed at Mercy Hospital for over 40 years, where she was a nursing supervisor. She retired in 1990.
Ginny was a member of St. Patrick's Church and volunteered at the VA Medical Center, Visiting Nurses of Johnson County and Iowa City Hospice. She enjoyed crocheting and was an avid Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs supporter. Most important to Ginny was her family.
The family extends their appreciation to Dr. Feeley and the caring staff at Mercy Hospice and Iowa City Hospice.
Ginny is survived by her four children, Patricia (Ed) Villhauer and Michael (Gail) O'Donnell, both of Iowa City, Timothy (Teri) O'Donnell of Overland Park, Kan., and Matthew O'Donnell (Darlene Stimac) of Bayside, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Beth, Katie (Jeff) Schafer, Emily (Mike) Lee, Molly, Daniel, Patrick., Lauren and Erin; four great-grandchildren, Samuel and Joseph Schafer and Magnolia and August Lee; sisters-in-law, Marcella Redlinger and Margo Redlinger; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1998; and her siblings, Leola Redlinger, Mary Greiner, Alvin, James, Bernard, John and Cletus Redlinger.
