A Mass of Christian Burial for Virginia "Ginny" M. Krowka McAndrew, 88, of Kalona, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond, with Father David Brownfield officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona with a rosary at 7 p.m. Virginia McAndrew died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the Pleasantveiw Home in Kalona.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Pleasantview Home.
Ginny McAndrew was born Dec. 19, 1925, to Thomas and Anna Krowka, of Chicago. Ginny graduated from Amundsen High School in Chicago in 1943, and the Iowa State College School of Agriculture in 1951. Ginny worked as a horticultural journalist in Iowa, until she married Dr. Paul Joseph McAndrew Sr. on Nov. 1, 1952. She then worked over 20 years as a wife, mother of six and part-time assistant in her husband's veterinary practice. Ginny owned and ran the Dari Diner Restaurant in Kalona from 1971 until 1976. She then worked 11 years (1976-88) as a records clerk at the UI College of Dentistry. After retirement, Ginny enjoyed volunteering over 15 years as a tutor for students at the Kalona Elementary School and as a helper at Thursday Catholic Mass at the Pleasantview Home.
Ginny is survived by her former husband, Paul McAndrew Sr. of Springfield, Mo.; her sister, Josephine Scholtus of Cedar Rapids; six children, Mark (Paula) of Key Biscayne, Fla., John, of Fairfield, former daughter-in-law, Linda of Little Rock, Ark., Matt (Marta) of Coralville, Paul Jr. (Lola) of Iowa City, Ann (Bob Pianta) of Charlottesville, Va., and Philip (Rex Reeve) of Oak Park, Ill.
Ginny loved each of her 18 grandchildren, Stephanie McAndrew (Thomas Huff), Chris (Bridget Kinney McAndrew), Susan McAndrew (Matt Parker), Patrick McAndrew (Sarah Potts McAndrew), Tim McAndrew, Rose Amundson (Robert), Paul McAndrew III ("Joe"), Meghan Pianta, Jackie Cintel (David), Sean McAndrew, Tony Pianta, Bridget and Michael McAndrew, Tim Pianta, Mary Ann McAndrew and Sarah, Steven and Leslie Ann McAndrew.
Ginny had five great-grandchildren, Anna Grace McAndrew, Thomas Andrew Huff, John ("Jack") Kinney McAndrew, Josephine Marie Huff and Clara Jane McAndrew.
Preceding Ginny in death were her parents and two sisters, Adelle Kozlowski and Sylvia Kosinski.
