Virginia May Griffin, 91, of Palo, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at West Ridge Care Center after a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Clinton Jeffers. Burial: Spring Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. and on Friday after 9 a.m. at the funeral home.
Virginia is survived by her son, Dana (Debra) Griffin of West Yellow-stone, Mont.; grand-children, Nick and Clarice of Havre, Mont., Matthew of Cedar Rapids and Ryan of Billings, Mont.; and great-grandson, Colt of Havre, Mont. Virginia also is survived by her niece, Kelynn Schulte (Kevin) of Norway, and their children, Kyle (Rachel) Schulte, Carter (Aly) Schulte and Malea Schulte.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margaret Anderson; and sister and brother-in-law, Lulubee and Jerry King.
Virginia was born May 11, 1924, to Walter and Edna Ribble Mawdsley, and lived her entire life in the Covington-Palo area. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Coe College in 1955 and her Master of Education degree from the University of Montana in 1975. Virginia taught in the Cedar Rapids community school system for many years.
Virginia's interests included music, sports, art, gardening and traveling in the western states. She sang in Sweet Adelines, a women's barbershop choir, for many years. She was inducted into the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame in 1984 and played in bowling leagues for several years. Virginia was a lifetime member of the Church at Covington.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
