Virgil Duane Munson, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Virgil was born March 8, 1932, the son of Carl and Henrietta (Hereid) Munson in Lawler, Iowa. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954. On June 26, 1955, he was married to Barbara Lahr in New Hampton, Iowa. Virgil attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and worked for 27 years as an electrician for Quaker Oats before retiring in 1994.
Virgil enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, stained glass and reading, especially about war history. He was an avid sports fan, golfer and Chicago Cubs fan. He and Barbara wintered in Florida every year for the past 23 years. Virgil was a member of the Country Friend's Dance Club and First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Munson; son, Ronald (Debbie) Munson; two daughters, Kathy (Steve) Schulte and Sandra (Scott) Harry; seven grandchildren, Lisa Howe, Stacy (Ian) Erickson, Michael (Jessica) Munson, Camille (Rich) Loughner, Monica (Derek) Miller, Alex Harry and Chris Harry; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.
Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church or Unity Point Hospice in memory of Virgil.
